GUTJAHR is a leading company for providing safe drainage, ventilation and uncoupling of coverings on balconies, terraces, façades and outdoor steps. Since it was founded in 1989, the company has been developing practical solutions to guarantee simple installation and long-lasting trouble-free coverings even on problem substrates. Gutjahr has seen continual sales growth over many years in Germany as well as in a number of other neighbouring European countries.

Walter Gutjahr, the founder of the company, also laid the foundation stone for its success in the mid-1980s. A master tiler and expert authority for the Cologne Chamber of Commerce, he knew exactly how little time it takes for damage to occur on balconies and patio terraces - and drew his own conclusions. In 1984 he filed an application for a patent for the precursor of today's successful AquaDrain® FE+ product. It signalled the advent of the first passive capillary surface drainage solution, which has now been in trouble-free use for over 20 years. In 2002 this functional principle was incorporated in the new technical bulletin for external surface coverings issued by the German Construction Industry Association (ZDB).

The invention of the reinforced thin-layer drainage solution saw GUTJAHR set a new milestone in balcony drainage. Watec®3E celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2008.

Since 1990, GUTJAHR has been the only manufacturer to offer extended warranties for its drainage systems, e.g. 6 years for balconies, patio terraces and outdoor steps with AquaDrain® drainage.
